Details: The Volcano Village Artists Hui hosts the 33rd annual Art Studio Tour and Sale. Visitors are invited to meet the artists in their studios and see artworks in a wide variety of media. New this year, there will be demonstrations of art making at each of the studios on Sunday, Dec. 1. A special drawing for pieces contributed by the artists will be held the last day of the event. PALM SEED STEM RANDOM WEAVE BASKETS WORKSHOP

Details: Learn how to take an inflorescence, palm seed stem and manipulate it into a defined shape. The baskets will have a leather hanger to hang on the wall. Students will create a mold in the class that will define the pocket shape and use reed to weave the shape. Dyes will also be available to add a little color. All supplies provided. If you have a favorite bead or seed pod, bring it to add. Embellishments will be available if students choose to add them. Cost is $55, or $50 for VAC members, plus a $30 supply fee. LIFE DRAWING WITH THE HILO ARTISTS HUI

Details: Open to all. Children younger than 18 years old must provide permission from a parent to attend. Cost is $10 per person. Arrive a few minutes early. Sessions feature drawing from a nude or partially draped model in a traditional format, starting with one minute gesture drawings and working up to 20 minute poses. Chairs are provided; however, participants must furnish their own drawing materials. Bring a drawing board or easel; 11-by-14-inch or larger pad of paper is recommended. All mediums are fine to use. If you wish to paint using traditional oils you must use a low odor, artist-grade solvent.

SILENT MOVIE NIGHT — “NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR”

Details: Just after 8 p.m. Nov. 14, 1959, a fissure erupted on the south wall of Kilauea Iki Crater. Within a day, multiple vents along the fissure consolidated into one main vent. During the next five weeks, lava fountains gushed from the vent in 17 separate episodes, flooding the crater with a lava lake about 440 feet deep. Lava fragments falling from the high fountains also formed a cinder-and-spatter cone named Pu‘u Pua‘i (gushing hill) on the rim of Kilauea Iki. Three days before the eruption ended Dec. 20, 1959, lava blasted 1,900 feet above the vent — the highest lava fountain ever measured in Hawaii. Join Don Swanson, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist emeritus, as he talks about this remarkable eruption and how it stands apart from all eruptive activity at Kilauea since then.
